Apache perchè non mi funziona .htaccess ?

Mi sapreste spiegare perchè questo file di configurazione di Apache  
httpd.conf non funziona x  l'autentificazione di una directory con   
.htaccess & .htpasswd ?

Le ho provate tutte... ma nn capisco dove sta il problema.
Sembra che nn mi rilevi i file .htaccess :-(
