giusto x completezza: 
quando ho fatto la cazzata mi sono reso conto subito di averla fatta e ho
brutalmente spento il pc (2/3 secondi dopo che l'mke2fs era inizato)

il risultato e' che ho risolto praticamente tutto con un e2fsck che ha
ricostruito quasi tutte (spero!) le informazioni che avevo.

decisamente utile comunque questo e2image di cui non sapevo l'esistenza.
