hai provato a far partire gdm senza fargli utilizzare la console locale?
in modalità gdm service-only diciamo...
Non ricodo esattamentela stringa (la cerco...) in gdm ma ricordo che  
effettuavo questa modifica per evitare di avere X che girava sul server.

Non ero in un vero e proprio ambiente LTSP, ma mi collegato con X  
-query ad esso dai client.
