Hmmm...questo _non_ è un errore, ti segnala la fine della compilazione.
Sicuro che non sia andato tutto bene?  
Cmq la procedura standard sarebbe:

cd /usr/src/linux-2.4
make mrproper
cp configs/kernel-<versione che ti interessa> .config
make oldconfig
make menuconfig (x eventuali modifiche)
make dep bzImage modules modules_install
